Frequently Asked Questions > What is a Typical Visit Pet-a-Pet Like?
The following narrative is an example of a typical visit.
Bob and his dog Lucky arrive 10-15 minutes early at the nursing home. They wander around outside giving Lucky a chance to calm down and relieve himself. Bob leaves his valuables in the car, as there is no good place inside. Bob clips on his HHS Volunteer name tag and ties on Lucky’s Pet-a-Pet bandanna.
A few minutes before the visit’s scheduled time, Bob and Lucky go into the facility and approach the reception desk. They identify themselves and their reason for visit. The receptionist calls the Activities Director as volunteers NEVER tour a facility without a staff escort.
The Director greets Bob and Lucky, and proceeds to walk them around the facility. Keeping Lucky on a tight leash, Bob follows the Director to a room. The Director knocks on the door and asks the resident if they want a visit from Bob and Lucky. The resident enthusiastically agrees and the team enters the room. Bob gives a cheerful greeting and ensures Lucky approaches the resident gently, never jumping up. The resident pets Lucky and has a great chat with Bob. After a few minutes, Bob says his goodbyes and thank yous and the tour continues. The Director takes him to other single-occupancy rooms, some double-occupancy, and some shared common rooms with many residents mingling.
Most residents are happy to see Lucky and enjoy petting him. Some just want to look. Others do not want a visit and Bob responds with a kind thanks and moves on. One resident hugged Lucky so tightly that Lucky was uncomfortable, but tolerant. Bob had to gently coax the resident to let go. Occasionally, a resident asks Bob for something, such as a drink of water, and Bob refers them to a staff member.
During the visits, Bob is careful to watch Lucky for signs of stress, such as panting, balking, and reduced eye contact. After about 45 minutes, Lucky appears tired so Bob tells the Director its time to wrap up the visit.
The Director walks Bob and Lucky back to the reception desk. Bob thanks the Director for the visit and says goodbye. Outside, Bob gives Lucky a few treats and a drink from his portable water dish and they head home.
