Make a Connection with Pet Therapy...
The Hinsdale Humane Society offers two unique ways for you and your pet to connect with others.
About Pet-a-Pet
The Pet-a-Pet program is simply human/pet volunteer teams visiting with residents of the area’s nursing homes and retirement communities. We share chats and smiles and our pets share their unending supply of warmth and love. Our goal is to relieve the loneliness and boredom of those confined to these facilities. We want to encourage reminiscense and recall. We want to start a positive chain reaction from resident to pet, resident to resident, and resident to staff. Founded in 1982, the Pet-a-Pet program has grown considerably and our volunteer teams currently visit 19 facilities monthly and reach hundreds of people annually.
About P.A.L.S. (Pet Assisted Learning)
P.A.L.S. is newer, started in 2006. In this program, volunteers and their own Delta-certified dogs visit schools and libraries where children read to them. Children, who may be intimidated learning to read around people, relax and can really make progress working with an animal. This program has been found to increase reading for pleasure for reluctant readers, as well as reading comprehension in children who are experiencing difficulty with reading.
